Grimm Tales: For Young and Old

by Philip Pullman

fairy-tales short-stories folk-tales Read: Mar 2026
Philip Pullman retells fifty of the Brothers Grimm's most beloved (and bloodthirsty) fairy tales with wit, clarity, and his trademark storytelling magic.

Review

It has some good stories, some boring ones, and was altogether a bit harder to read due to there being so many stories. I found myself not wanting to pick it up again.

Discussion Questions

  1. Which tale surprised you the most — either by how it ended or by how Pullman retold it?

  2. Do the moral lessons hold up today, or do they feel outdated?

  3. Were there any stories you already knew that felt different or fresh in Pullman's version?

  4. Which tale do you think is the darkest, and did you find that darkness effective or uncomfortable?

  5. If you could live inside one of the Grimm worlds, which would you choose and why?
